I stand as a trans woman from the Tày tribe.

Welcome to my wooden-pillar Tày house!

My name is Hà Minh. I am a visual artist and poet living and working in Hanoi. I taught myself to paint in 2018. The same year, I started showing a few small paintings here and there in a local gallery. In 2023, I had my debut solo exhibition of paintings.

I know what it's like to be exiled by a father and born without a mother. To be an artist before officially being recognized as one. To write until I become a writer. Writing alongside making visual art pieces is my way of conceptualizing the visual experience.

Growing up as a trans woman in patriarchal Vietnam, I've learned to embrace the role of an absorbent vessel—both mother and child. In my Rapunzel-like tower of entrapment, I nurture my inner child through art, continuously absorbing and transforming my reality. My creative process is an endless cycle of rebirth, where my mind, body, and materials come together in harmony. My visual art, rooted in the physical world, inspires my poetry, which reflects my inner world—and the two feed into each other endlessly.

I belong to the Tày ethnic minority from the northern mountains of Vietnam, where my people live in harmony with nature, crafting their material culture from their environment. In the urban landscape of Hanoi, I continue this tradition by cultivating a garden of the mind. The fruits of my labor are dedicated to queer youth and my Tày community.

My Tày house's three wooden pillars

My first pillar

The Visual

Visual art speaks to my soul. Each piece of mine reflects a gender-multifaceted identity and multilayered cultural heritage.

The Verbal

Poetry captures the essence of my transformation and identity, crafted through intimate reflections and the way the elderly in my tribe pass on narratives with such vivid imagery.

The Love

I’m part of several art communities that foster connection and support through art while encouraging self-expression.
